We explore the most popular social media platforms and the influence Facebook has in the market.
Which social media platform do you use the most? Chances are it's owned by Facebook with Whatsapp, Instagram, Facebook and Facebook Messenger topping the most downloaded apps on iOS and Android worldwide last year.
You're also likely to be using these apps whilst in the office, as a recent survey (LondonOffices.com) stated that 71% of office workers in London often check social media whilst in a meeting. In contrast, Generation Y users are moving away from Facebook and towards WhatsApp and Snapchat.
Facebooks’ domination of the Instant Messaging (IM) market can be demonstrated by the very fact that the combination of Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp controls around 79% of the IM market. Unsurprisingly approximately 70 % of WhatsApp consumers use the app every day, which has helped contribute towards its success in the social media app market.
That being said Facebook was actually the only major social network to experience a fall in active users in 2014, falling by 9% compared to the previous year. Facebook still has a lot of work to do before it catches up with Whatsapp in the IM market, however the introduction of Messenger is a significant step forward. In contrast to its rival social media networks it still has a long way to go in terms of usage and members as its competitors continue to grow and succeed.
Snapchat was the fastest growing app in 2014 with a 57% increase on its 2013 figures. Facebooks’ fall in users from the previous year may have been undesirable although it seems that WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram are compensating for this, Snapchat better watch their backs.
