Our UX consultant explains the uniqueness of his market and why UX should not be confused with Graphic Design.
The User Experience market seems to be one of the least understood areas of the digital markets. More often than not recruiters are suggesting graphic design roles thinking that they are suitable for UXers. Having recruited talent in both the design and UX spaces, I can say that the difference in skills sets could not be greater.
UX is not just one simple discipline as it has many areas of focus. From the research aspect all the way through to the wire framing work there are different important elements. This is why it is critical to get a proper grasp of what the client and candidate wants under the UX ‘umbrella’ if the recruiter is going to make a suitable proposal of a new role or candidate that is relevant.
To further confuse matters there are then the hybrid UX/UI roles. These roles seem to want the best of both worlds. Proper UXers with specific design skill sets are hard to come by, and again a proper understanding has to be made to ensure the right roles are sent to them. They cannot be sent wireframing only roles or graphic design only roles. It is therefore vital to get the balance right with these roles, something that the recruiter quite often fails at and gets wrong.
With such a candidate led market, where there are so many roles and not enough candidates the challenge for our clients who want to hire full time UXers is bigger than ever. A new trend in the UX marketplace has developed where UXers want to move from Permanent to Contract roles, adding to the challenges that are already in place.
Once again it is extremely important to not only find the right person but to also move the process along quickly enough. This is to ensure that a client does not miss out on the candidate to another company whilst trying to complete the interview process.
As a UX specialist at Xcede, it is my job to firstly fully understand the candidate’s requirements. Secondly I must then match them appropriately to the client whilst ensuring that the process moves at the right pace.
Are you currently looking or a new role? Do you fancy a new challenge? If so then please get in touch as I have plenty of opportunities on the books.
