Melissa explores the issue surrounding job descriptions within the Recruitment sector
Graduating and securing your first job can be a very daunting time, especially if you are not given the right help and support needed through such a difficult process. It can also be a very exciting and fulfilling moment in your life. As an Internal Recruitment Consultant at Xcede I have seen and interviewed fresh Graduates looking to secure their first office job, however many do not seem to understand what Recruitment agencies do nor what they can offer in terms of career progression.
Before beginning to put together a job advert for a Graduate campaign with our Marketing Manager, I wanted to do some research. I searched "interesting Graduate job descriptions" and found that the "search related" results included "getting out of recruitment industry" "why are there so many recruitment jobs" "I don't want to be in sales anymore".
Just to be clear, I did not enter “Recruitment” at all in my search and found the results to be quiet shocking. It is so important that as an industry we become better at informing Graduates what life as a Recruitment Consultant is actually like. The reality of the Recruitment world can be very different if we do not inform and educate Graduates from the beginning.
I wanted our advert to be different and appeal to Graduates across Europe. Often adverts for Graduate Recruitment Consultants create an unrealistic picture and make promises of incentives for example, ”100k OTE”, “Michelin star lunches” and "holidays”. It is important to me that our adverts are realistic and inform Graduates that these incentives are rewards…let’s face it the majority of Grads will not make £100k in their first year as a Recruiter! Of course, Recruitment is a rewards driven business and here at Xcede we do have Graduates that have surpassed expectations and are earning amazing OTE's.
A ‘typical’ advert will mention that your first year in recruitment you will earn a ridiculous OTE. Coming in as a Graduate your salary will most likely be between £18-£23k…so that means you will have to make your first deal the very day they step into your new office to hit that OTE!
I understand the competitive streak that Graduates have, they want to be the top earners in their peer group, however to become the best they need to be trained and developed by the best and that’s what we offer here at Xcede. Our Consultants did not become the best in their respective markets overnight. As a Recruitment Consultant, you will be much more than just a sales person you will develop key skills such as communicating, contract negotiation and relationship management.
Recruitment is one of the few careers where you can really determine how much you earn each year depending on the work and effort you put in. It is an extremely lucrative industry to be in if you have big goals to achieve. It is also a profession where you can be in your 20s and earn the salary you have dreamt of and several years down the line you could potentially find yourself in a managerial position or similar. Recruitment is a career you can really grab and run with and be as successful as you want to be.
As with any industry, companies must ensure that they are being as honest and realistic as possible. Selling the dream to a trainee will give them a shock six months down the line, leading them to begin questioning why they haven’t made the commission they were promised. This has already given the Recruitment industry a bad reputation and will carry on if organisations continue with false promises of what to expect in your first year in Recruitment.
